How Can a Nervous Young Man Give a Good Poetry Reading?

poetry
Happy Paws asked:

In about a day I have to give a poetry reading before a moderately large crowd. The problem is that I get really nervous in that sort of setting. For example, I swallow many of my words and even shiver slightly. Is there any way I can give a good performance? Any things I should keep in mind? This is really important to me, because many of my friends will be there as well.

Thank you.

Carmen asked:

I’m referring to those contests which require no fee from the poet, but give out a monetary prize for selected entries.

Also, is it worth participating in some poetry contests in which you need to pay a small fee to enter? Are any of them legit?

cheeky_lil_pixiegirl asked:

I write a bit of poetry, but it seems the poems that I write that I like others don’t and the ones that I think are immature and too sing-song, ppl like? I don’t know whether people are just being flattering or they really like it? I want to know how to get a bit of constructive criticsm and learn to develop my poetry further. Any help would be appreciated
Crystal Chorus

With a silver voice she gently sings
In broken crystal chorus
And slowly down to earth she comes
Dancing right before us
Sounds of drums and silver spoons
Tinkling in their drawer
The sweetest sound we ever heard
And feared we’d hear no more
She brings to earth a precious gift
The most precious we could gain
And we never heard a sweeter song
Than that of falling rain
O’ Crystal Angel down you drift
How sweetly you do sing
Dance all night upon my roof
For tis hope that you may bring
For dusty plains and broken dreams
Will pulse with life once more
For only your sweet melody
Is welcome at my door
Keep up the steady chorus now
I need to hear your sound
And please be sure to dance some more
Upon our dusty ground
Do you think that one is immature? Is it any good at all?

I’m a writer, and am looking for a poem community where I can submit and read poems. Something such as fanfiction.net, except poetry.

I’m looking to go simplistic and without paying.

Thanks!
