A.R.K. asked:

I have never taken any lessons, but find myself writing constantly. I know the basics with patterns and points, so I’m curious what the majority of people that read poetry prefer.

I always thought the pattern was kind of a brain massage, or a headache, if it’s one that doesn’t work for you, so it kind of eases your mind to make it easier to receive the point. If that makes sense to you.

The things I write are random and are not limited to just one type of pattern, I actually sometimes ignore a rhyming pattern and just write whatever. I, personally, like my own stuff.

And since I don’t know how to tell what someone else would think if they read it, I’ll start with the simple question.

What’s your favorite kind of poetry?

Something funny and corny. Every time I write a poem, it turns out to be depressing. And I’m not a depressed person! I want just some funny and quirky things to write poetry about. Something that even I can’t make sound depressing.

I ask not only why we write it, but what it is – a pure art? A form that enables the writer to render emotions, feelings, and ideas through heightened diction? Is that all it is? And how does one assess the quality of a piece of poetry?
