Sweet Johnny asked:

I’ve never been interested in poetry, but am well versed in literature. I’m looking to read some contemporary (preferably acclaimed) poetry that speaks about humanity and/or society. I’m not looking for love poems or poems about the beauty of a place or anything of that sort.

I always have trouble understanding poems. I just don’t get poetry. Is there a certain way to read and understand poetry? Is it a skill? Are there any poets out there that are easier to read and understand what they are talking about?

I have asked this question quite a few times, but I never get any good responces. I have never really read that much poetry, though I read a lot of books and I seem to be more fond of ones that are filled with so much romance, it seems almost poetic, so I want to give poetry a try. Im going to the library tomorrow, and I dont know what Im looking for. Help please =)

What is your favorite type of poetry?

A.R.K. asked:

I have never taken any lessons, but find myself writing constantly. I know the basics with patterns and points, so I’m curious what the majority of people that read poetry prefer.

I always thought the pattern was kind of a brain massage, or a headache, if it’s one that doesn’t work for you, so it kind of eases your mind to make it easier to receive the point. If that makes sense to you.

The things I write are random and are not limited to just one type of pattern, I actually sometimes ignore a rhyming pattern and just write whatever. I, personally, like my own stuff.

And since I don’t know how to tell what someone else would think if they read it, I’ll start with the simple question.

What’s your favorite kind of poetry?

Some poetry is interesting and inspires me, but some is just plain…boring and too complex.

Name an author, or poetry book, and what type it is. It would be greatly appriciated =) thanks.

IHF asked:

I’m going over poetry in English class, and its like the only thing I **** at in English. How do I get better at this?

Could you tell me how to write great poems without having to think so hard (even then it sucks)?

And could you tell me how to analyze a poem easily? I can’t do this too well.

I think it has to do with me not being an abstract thinker.
